I really need to rephotograph this, these are from shitty photos I took on my phone when I was making this thing. I wanna get this up here though, and moving quickly sort of has to be the point with the blog now eh. So...

This is a record I made with Bruce Russell last year. I guess I think I have a lot to say about this. To start I should say that by 'made' with I mean I recorded this and played on it WITH Bruce. The records were then lathe-cut by Small Run Records in Melbourne, and I then hand-made the gate-fold covers.

This project was kicked off by my being invited to participate in/contribute to an exhibition called 'Make Something'. This is a thing that's run for a few years in Auckland and is organised, I'd use the word 'curated' very loosely, by a couple of graphic designers. I'd been asked a couple of years in a row and eventually thought maybe I should do something for this, partly because I thought 1. it'd be cool to have an excuse to go up to Auckland, and 2. I kinda of liked the premise – that the invited designer (me) had to collaborate with someone from another field. That part really interested me, and I started to think of all sorts of people who I could work with. I'd known Bruce for a while by this stage but never thought to do anything with him. He and I had talked a lot about music, but that was about it. Over the years, maybe because of these conversations, I've developed a decent interest in 'noise', and certainly the deployment of noise in song settings. Bruce, if you haven't heard of him, is somewhat of an iconic figure here in NZ, a sort of music anti-hero, the literal opposite to all that horrible 'Kiwi' music like Dave Dobbin, Crowded House, etc. Bruce is most well know for his band with Michael Morley and Robbie Yeats – The Dead C. The more I'd gotten to understand what Bruce had done over his career the more I'd grown to really look up to him. And so it was with some nervousness that I asked him to collaborate on this. To make a record with me. It really freaked me out to be completely honest.

Anyway Bruce was into it, and so plans were made to start recording as the deadline for the exhibition approached.

We recorded over about three weekends from memory? Just one day each weekend, and we worked really quickly. I was sort of really surprised how fast Bruce works, but then that should be obvious right, like he's not gonna be worried about getting the perfect take, or endless overdubs etc! I really liked this approach and feel like I learned a lot from Bruce during this process. My nervousness quickly disappeared and really dug the whole thing. Hamish Kilgour came in for the last day of recording, which freaked me out a bit, but it was very cool hanging with these guys (The Opawa 45s ended up playing support at one of Hamish's gigs just after this). I don't mean to sound like a 15 year old fan boy, but hey I once was and so well you know...

Anyway, the recordings were 'in the bag' and sent off to Melbourne to cut when I heard from one of the organisers of the exhibition that the whole thing had been suddenly cancelled! Apparently because one or two of the other contributors had pulled out. I was pretty pissed to say the least. As was Bruce. The lathe-cuts were gonna cost me a lot of money, and I dunno, by this stage I was really happy with what we'd done and I wanted there to be some way for that to 'see the light'. On top of that layer of disappointment was the feeling that this, the while 'exhibition' thing, was always gonna be a bit shit anyway BECAUSE it was being organised by graphic designers. Why would I think that? That could be a whole post of it's own. But basically because I've worked as a designer for the art world for such a long time, I guess I have a certain level of expectation about what it means to essentially commission people to make work for an exhibition. And I wasn't left with any sense that these graphic designers who were 'playing' at curators really had any clue about that. I felt like they exhibited a real lack of respect and general disregard beyond this being a sort of 'portfolio' piece for themselves.

I carried on making the covers regardless – at least half the point since the things were to be 'exhibited' – while trying to think of what to do with these things now. To kick off with I started making dummies of a gatefold cover which you would have to open to get the record out. I've not seen a cover like this before, but always imagined it being a good idea. I'm sure they exist? I just have never seen one...
[Above: my bike above Purau Bay looking back over at Diamond Harbour]

To be honest I haven't even been thinking about this stupid blog for ages. I haven't even really been thinking about bikes much. I dunno if I've mentioned this here or not but we moved to Diamond Harbour last year. Which has been great. Mostly. Maybe I'll come back to that. Anyway the point I was going to make is that since moving out here and having quite a commute now to get to work, my bikes really have become 'work-horses' so to speak. Daily commuters. Daily riders. Which on one hand is cool, but on the other hand means that because I ride so much in the week now I don't get so excited by the idea of going for 'a ride' with the boys in the weekends. I'm also usually just trying to keep my bikes going, rather than giving a shit what they look like. And so I've been feeling like I don't have much interesting to say about motorcycling lately. Maybe that'll change again, I'm sure it will, but for now I'm sorta swamped in other things...

[Above: digging out under the deck behind our house in Diamond Harbour]

This fucking house! Moving out of the city was supposed to be relaxing. Well it has and hasn't been. It is beautiful over here as you can see from that photo up the top there. However we kinda really fucked up and bought a house on a hill that has no drainage. I mean literally NO drainage. No drains. I didn't even know what this meant until recently, but I sure do now. We had a proper legit building inspection done before we bought this place, but they somehow failed to point out that the house had serious storm-water leaking underneath, small under-runners basically, that had over time washed all the dirt away from around the piles. That's bad (just in case you don't know). Sooooo... discovering this, and the extent of it was somewhat demoralising and quickly took the shine off of our moving out of the city (although the city can totally get fucked regardless). Anyway, point being, with not much money left I had to figure out how to solve this fairly massive problem... which of course has meant doing most of the work, almost all of it actually, myself. So I've spent most of the summer digging. I've ripped up the large deck behind the house, dug and laid a feild drain 1.5m deep across the entire back of the section, dug out 1.5m deep behind the house to lay a drain there, dug out/removed the existing waste-water and sewer (which was leaking, probably since the earthquakes in 2011). I've built as retaining wall (thanks Joe!), put in sumps, new stormwater, waste water, connected everything up etc... but are currently waiting on good weather to waterproof (i.e. paint with bitumen sealer) the below ground section of the back of the house before we can put the final drain in there and back fill it all with tonnes and tonnes of gravel (which has to be wheelbarrowed up the hill by hand).

[Above: low retaining wall behind house, built mostly by Joe]

So yeah, asides from working my actual job, that's pretty much what I've been up to these last few months. Grim eh. Home ownership is for suckers. I miss renting and not giving a fuck. All I can see are problems around the house that need to be dealt with/fixed in the near future. Urgh. I do have a garage for the first time in my life though. That's cool. Although it's a total mess at the moment because of all the earthwork and drainlaying I've been doing. Oh, I've also been trying to chip away at building a band-room/recording studio at home...

[Above: small basement room I'm trying to turn into a band-room/studio]

This was actually largely WHY we bought THIS house. There's a separate studio/sleep-out type structure up behind the house where I'd thought we'd have the band room. However Nadine's sister moved out here with us and she's been living out there. So anyway there's a much smaller basement room that is largely concrete block and half underground, and so seemingly much easier to (to some extent) soundproof. It was freezing cold down there though and also sounded terrible, so I started by insulating and relining this room just after Xmas. That's done now, and it's carpeted, and it's heaps warmer and it sounds a lot better. I kinda fucked up though because I'd assumed there was insulation in the ceiling, and there's not. And so now I'm about to cut out the ceiling and fill it with soundproofing as well. It feels kind never-ending too, like the drains. And I just desperately wanna make some noise. Late at night preferably. And I guess now, after all this work, I'm not even sure it's gonna be soundproof enough for that. I really need to have guitars feeding back at 3am if I'm gonna be happy about life ok.

[Above: Carlton badged Kawaai S-170 'Hound Dog Taylor' guitar feeding back in band-room/studio]

You can't tell of course, but this guitar here is droning away really good. In the bandroom, but just before the really expensive 70s reissue carpet got put in (which Nadine insisted on, I woulda put any old thing in to be honest). I was doing this to test how much sound was getting out, and trying to imagine how annoyed I'd be if I was one of our neighbours. It's hard for me to imagine though because I find a guitar feeding back to be just about the most beautiful sound in the world? Cool looking guitar though eh? I bought this off Greg 'Guitar Store' Leaman... who just constantly buys stuff and sells it on... mostly to me it seems. I bought a couple of guitars off him recently that I thought would be 'wall hangers', decoration really, but when I get them I always end up spending money getting them to play nicer and sound good, actually these sounded amazing – surprisingly enough – when I got them. Hence wanting to get them playable I guess. I actually played this one, the 'Hound Dog' at the last ever Hex Waves gig a couple of months back (I won't get into that here!).

I suppose I have been playing a lot of gigs. Well not heaps. But playing consistently I guess.
[Above: Poster for a gig we played last week. I liked this, not because of the way it looked, but because I designed the format to work on lamp-posts. No one really bothers putting up band posters anymore in Chch, mostly because you have to go through Phantom, and it costs, and it's not worth it. However I'd noticed no one was putting posters on lamp posts much. Not like they do in other cities. So anyway Lil 'Luke and I did a few runs of these suckers and I think it worked quite well. We didn't get in trouble, they were quiet 'visible', and they stayed up for ages.]

I've been playing mostly with Lil' Luke Shaw in/as The Opawa 45s, which has become a strangely schizophrenic sort of band, moving between slow lilting 50s instrumentals like Santo and Johnny's 'Sleepwalk', and then these long improvised 'jam' things, inspired I guess by things like early Velvet Underground, Spacemen 3, Jim Jarmusch's band Squrl, maybe a bit of Flying Saucer Attack. That sort of thing. Lil' Luke's doing his Hons at the moment and is research soundtracks/scores etc, so that's been a background to our move in this direction I suppose. We talk about guitars a lot. And amps. And effects... a bit. Trying to keep that last part in check. In fact I'm really liking the sound of my Gretsch straight into my new Vox AC30. Straight in. Pure tone. God listen to me! How embarrassingly dad rock or something.

Which reminds me – records. Making records. Another embarrassingly middle aged, middle class dude thing to do. Motorbikes, guitars, records, I'm a walking cliche. God it's so terrible isn't it. And yet I don't know what else to do. Or I don't see anything else worth doing, I guess is more to the point. I was going to talk about the records I'm working on at the moment here, but I can't be bothered and I think this has become very much long enough! What I was actually going to say here was that this is the stuff I want to be able to write about (thinking by writing). I know I've said it a few times in the history of this thing, but it was never supposed to be a motorcycle blog. It just turned into that. 'Head Full of Snakes' was something a started because it represented my state of mind, my anxiety about not being very good at staying focused, but somewhere where I could put all these things together and let the common threads between them emerge. Really only for my own purposes. And I guess I feel a little freer now because I can see that the blog's not getting the 'hits' it was when the magazine we started was getting so much press! That always made me feel like I had to just write about motorbikes here. But fuck that. And yes I've said that before. And yes I'm home sick and so have time for rants like this, but I thought I'd try and have a serious go at getting back to HFoS's roots over the next little while, and talk/write about some of this other shit that spirals around in my brain keeping me up at night and, no doubt, will one day kill me.
Joe and Malcolm too a dip in the lake and I thought 'fuck that'. We headed for Naseby for the night from here. Amazing day with stunning weather. Joe and Milky were so happy they got a bit touchy-feely that evening while checkin out some nature...
Next day we rode from Naseby to Makarora through Wanaka. Another amazing day, great weather etc, a few more cars I guess, but didn't take any photos.

After camping in Makarora we headed through the Haast Pass and onto the West Coast where we also, unusually, had great weather. That road is amazing when it's nice. There'd been a few wash-outs recently from big rains, but mostly it was just great... Milky wouldn't quit touching Joe though...
Taken me a while to get around to getting these photos up, mostly because I have to photoshop out all the black spots hat I get in my photos because of all the shit that's been forced into the camera by my taking it out and taking photos at open road speeds. Anyways, these are from DAY 1... left Christchurch on Wednesday about 5.30pm and headed south to Geraldine and then onto Tekapo. Some amazing changes in light, got fuckin' cold, but a beautiful ride with bugger all traffic being mid-week and all. Spent the night free-camping at Lake Pukaki, drinking cheap liquor and watching the stars in one of the clearest skies the world has to offer (we're very close to the Mount John Observatory here).
Just felt like it was high time I put another photo of this old girl up again... she's running pretty good at the moment (touch wood!), apart from a sticking slide in the carb. I've been having a lot of trouble with this bike for the last couple of years that I think is related to it being kept in a shipping container in fairly cold Christchurch winters. Sometimes I open it up and it's literally like a refrigerator in there. I think this is why my cables have been getting shitty and corroded, and also why the slide's been sticking so bad that I have to pull it out and lube it if the bike's been sitting for a week. Anyways we're about to move and I'll have an actual garage... for the first time since I've owned this! So in like 10 years! Can't wait to have a proper work space etc too... and a nice long ride through the country to get to work.Luke Woodhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11427410090230638301noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7927337482724463682.post-61563716195976940172017-06-26T14:13:00.001-07:002017-06-26T14:13:20.976-07:00First Ilam Press Records Record

So looking back it was only a couple of posts ago really that I proposed I might do this thing called 'Ilam Press Records'. Well here's the first record... this is a lathe cut record made in an edition of 30 by Peter King Lathe Records down in Mt Somers here. The band is one I'm in with a guy from school, a kind of guitar duo 'matinee' band. Really we made this as a bit of a test case, and I have to say I like it. I think this short-run record thing could be good for me. I've sent another one to Peter King which we should get back soon, a Katabatic Wind one, so a very different sound, and also it'll be a 33rpm 12" record this time.Luke Woodhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11427410090230638301noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7927337482724463682.post-24790026900740422382017-05-30T18:15:00.000-07:002017-05-30T18:18:39.584-07:00Akounak Tedalat Taha Tazouhai
Last week one of our contributors passed away. A real gem of a man, Lionel Newbery, or 'Duc' as many people called him, contributed fragments and memories of his ride around the world back in the late '70s to issues #2 and #3 of Head Full of Snakes under the title 'Not Safe'. That's Lionel above on his 1974 Moto Guzzi GT850, the bike he rode from London back to NZ. He still had this bike and it was great to see it again, sitting out the back of his house at his funeral/tangi last Thursday. His kids told me that they plan to do the ol' Guzzi up too, in Lionel's memory.

Last Thursday was amazing and seemed a really fitting send off for someone who was so sort of quietly influential in quite a few peoples lives. Lionel had a large and really loving family, and he was also well known to the locals over in Lyttelton where he lived. It was actually seeing Lionel riding his old red Ducati (below) around Lyttelton back in the very early 2000s that made me get back into motorcycles (having since sold my bike after my cousin died on one). I loved the look and sound of Lionel's Ducati, and he'd often be parked up outside No.6, one of the old cafes that was run by Bruce Russell and his wife Kate back then.

Lionel had shown me photos of his old Ducati GT 750 that he'd bought brand new and raced, but I'd never seen it in the flesh. Turns out his brother had it up in Auckland, and so he rode it back down all the way to Lyttelton for the funeral! I think it bought a tear to many people's eyes when Lionel's son (on the red bike) and his brother (on the GT) started up both bikes to lead a procession of motorcycles over to the Diamond Harbour cemetery. Lionel went in the old Citroen you can just see in front of the motorbikes there.

I thought it would be a slow sombre ride around the bays, but no! These two on the Ducatis took off and this would easily be one of the fastest most hair-raising group rides I've been on. A fitting tribute as everyone agreed, 'that's how Lionel would have ridden'.

The ceremony was beautiful with no involvement from any weird outside participants who didn't know Lionel. The family filled the grave with shovels, everyone got real dirty. There were no speeches, but there were a couple of songs. It was really moving and special.

Here's to you Lionel, and long may the Guzzi run.
Was cleaning off my desktop and thought I'd put THIS up on here. It's an article by Vicki Anderson which uses interviews with me, Chris (of QCR), Paddy Snowden and Kerry Swanson. It was done around the time of the last Smash Palace Motorcycle Show. I sorta talked about what I liked about motorbikes and how I got interested in them from when I was a kid. I dunno, it seems relevant?Luke Woodhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11427410090230638301noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7927337482724463682.post-19308374080037257762017-03-09T16:10:00.001-08:002017-03-09T16:10:23.547-08:00New year, same shit... ?

Ok so it's been a while eh. What the fuck's going on? Well, heaps actually. I guess I just haven't been bothered with this particular forum or whatever you call it. I've been thinking about that lately – this particular forum or whatever you want to call it – and the whole Head Full of Snakes publication offshoot, motorcycles, the culture(s) around them, etc. But let's back up a little.

A month or so ago I went fucking sailing. I'd done a little bit of sailing years ago as a kid and then I worked on boats in Spain in the 90s and thought I was right fuckin over boats. Mostly cause it was all rich folk and whatnot, especially the Spain experience. But this – this [above] – this was fucking awesome. The ultimate in antisocial activities... antisocial apart from those on the boat with you of course, although secretly thinking; hey if I could learn to do it myself I literally could be out there on my own. Yeah. Relaxing.

I did ride up (to Picton) but the ride was awful. That road (Lewis Pass) is totally fucked now that it's the only road that connects north and south (due to the Kaikoura Rd. getting totally destroyed by quakes late last year). They've made heaps of parts of the road 80kph, there's roadworks every few minutes, and endless lines of cars following endless lines of trucks at about 40–50kph. There's also – of course – cops. Heaps of them. Like flies on shit I guess. I got a fine for 'dangerous passing' even though I didn't cross a yellow line and never broke the speed limit. Apparently there's some rule about having 100 meters clear ahead of you no matter what speed the traffic is moving (or NOT moving) at. Fuck it. I took some photos on the bike but they're mostly pretty shit cause like I said it's all lines of cars and roadworks. Fuckin lame. Here's one for context...

See. Fucked eh!? It was like this for nearly eight hours. Made me think about selling a bike and using the money as a downpayment on a yacht – a 30'ish foot keeler like we went away on. Hamish (who took us) said he could take me out some more and learn me real good.

Anyway the holidays were basically over at that point and I was terrified of going teaching again. I wished I could retire already. I felt like I was losing interest in everything... design, school, art... motorcycles... everything except music actually. Been playing guitar a lot. I might start talking about music more on here? Maybe that's a plan. HFoS wasn't ever supposed to be just about motorbikes anyway. Not originally.

Here's a guitar I bought in LA when we were there at Xmas time:

It's a 1967 Gretsch Rally. It's a little beat up, which I like. It wasn't really what I was supposed to be getting. I was really planning to buy either something old and CHEAP, like an old '50s Silvertone or something, OR get a new Gibson SG or something like that. Problem is that once I played this particular guitar I just sorta couldn't stop thinking about it.

Apart from guitars the other thing I thought about a lot as Nadine and I drove around the desert (California, Nevada, and Arizona) was trying to be less stressed out this year. And one of the things I kept coming back to was how I always end up involved in 'serial' publications – projects that once started are very hard to stop/end/pull out of. Obviously Head Full of Snakes is one of these, as was The National Grid, and Cheap Thrills (the most recent one I'd become involved in).

I'd taken the newest issue of Cheap Thrills to launch at a sort of book/zine fair in Mexico City. While I appreciated this, the invitation I mean, I struggled to enjoy being there because I was fucking burnt-out... by having made the thing, and just by having had a generally shitty year. (I know this is getting a bit personal, but stick with me I'm going somewhere with this... I think?) So post-Mexico driving round California with Nadine I made the decision to not do Cheap Thrills anymore. Big decision actually, cause mostly I really like this publication and I think something like it should certainly exist in NZ. Maybe it will carry on, I'm not sure? That'll depend on Erin, the other (main) editor.

Which brings me to Head Full of Snakes. Because really what I thought was that I should STOP doing serial publications, rediscover some sense of enthusiasm (which you need to do stupid shit like make magazines/books/music/culture/the-stuff-that-makes-life-worth-living), and focus on maybe just making the occasional one-off book? One of the big problems that I've discovered with the serial is that everyone's interested in the first and maybe second issue, and then people sort of lose interest from there on in. Head Full of Snakes sold out the first issue in only a couple of weeks. The second issue a couple of months or more. The third issue hasn't sold out yet (two years later), and the fourth issue hasn't really sold very well at all so far. To be fair we were probably better at sending out review copies and stuff like that early on, so it's our enthusiasm in question here too, not just yours.

Head Full of Snakes was fun (and traumatic) when me and Stuart would get together and make it in a sort of whirlwind. There was a kind of satisfying madness to the whole thing. Like it all sort of flew in the face of the horrific realities of the neoliberal world we live in. But... the last issue we didn't make together. And I didn't really like it. And maybe that's why it's not selling so great? Maybe you can tell that it wasn't made with that same sense of mad love? Can that kind if wild romance ever be rekindled???

Hence my feeling like one-offs might be the future? You get the enthusiasm, release the energy, and it's done. If I even keep making books/magazines/publications at all? Funnily enough the last page in Cheap Thrills was a sort of pseudo-ad for something that was really just a joke...

A joke which really got me thinking that maybe Ilam Press COULD run as a small record label? Which got me thinking that maybe making records (and associated graphic ephemera) would be a good break (departure) from making books? Aaron would still make books obviously, but I could start the record label part? (I should point out here that have ZERO interest in making another book for an artist or an art gallery... I want to get as far away from that as I possibly can, and I'm totally sick of working as an artists PR tool. I hope that time of my life is unequivocally over.) I'm possibly (probably!) romanticising the record label thing, but for now that seems interesting anyway and I feel like I'd rather work with musicians than artists.

But Head Full of Snakes you ask? Good question. I really need to talk to Stuart obviously. I feel like we should at least make one more, and if it's going to be the last issue we should call it that and do it right, send it off with some bells and whistles and fireworks and burn-outs or something. Not just let it fade away. I know there's people have some content sitting there waiting for us to make another issue and it'd be good to see that out.

Or... maybe that's just how I'm feeling right now and things will change and we'll get right back into it?

Download over.
Only took my phone to take photos on and it ran outta juice after the first night down there, but anyways... here's some of the photos. A rag-tag bunch of us (on very different bikes) met up at Smash Palace on the Thursday morning...
Just whipped up this poster for the next Smash Palace bike show... Johnny did the illustration. Thanks Johnny! You might recognize these faces/motorcycles? I'll print a limited edition run of these which we'll sell pretty cheap at the show (and maybe also from the bar?).

But yeah it's on the 5th of November this year... which is also Guy Fawkes! So it's probably gonna be a pretty sweet after-party, nudge nudge wink wink. Shakin' Evil will play at it again and so will Greg and Lil' Luke's new band, Slippers & Raisins.

Thought it was about time we had an update on this guy! Above is a photo of my Commando at dad's a couple of months ago after I took it there to clean it up after the HFoS #4 launch ride... which was a total wash-out; rain, dirt-roads, breakdowns, crashes etc. Very eventful, kinda fun, but left the old Norton in a rough state! Anyway while giving it a good 'up-close-and-personal' type clean I noticed heaps of shit needed fixing and replacing – starting with the gators below...

Now these pieces of shit had only been on the bike for about two or maybe three months. I'd had Roger rebuild my forks for me in about late Feb or March I think? He put these gators on and I dunno where they came from, but they obviously are shit.

I was hoping I might get away with just replacing the gators, but there was so much shit had got in them by this stage the seals were buggered and needed replacing.

Dropping the forks out was fairly self-explanatory. I followed my manual a bit and winged it where I could. To dismantle the forks I actually went and bought a cheap belt-spanner (see below). You can see by the marks on the lower fork tube that people have been doing it in the past with vice-grips or whatever but I wanted to try out the belt spanner and it was only $20. Stoked I did too cause it worked really well and was well worth the buying.

I could have just replaced the seals but decided to strip 'em right back and have a good look at everything internally. In the end I just replaced the fibre washers at the bottom of the damper rod and the stanchion seals. The bushes all looked fine.

Putting the new gators on the lower fork legs was proving difficult until I heated them up in front of a heater! That made easy work of it. These gators are from John Miller and they're proper Andover ones, so hopefully the bloody last?

Putting the forks back into the bike proved a little more difficult than pulling them out. I think they were like this before, but the right hand stanchion wouldn't go fully up into the tapered yoke. You can see below the left one does, but the right one is sitting quite a bit too low...

This has been a real headfuck! I tried cleaning out and polishing the hole with ultra-fine sandpaper and it didn't make any difference. I know you're supposed to use the chrome top bolts to pull the legs up into the taper (with the washers and instrument housings on), but that simply wouldn't work. It didn't matter what I did this wouldn't go up into the taper. In the end I showed these photos to both Ray Coleman and Andrew Daly at bikenight and they both said they didn't think I needed to worry about it too much, so I've taken their advice and put them back together and I'm trying to forget about... while shit like this really plays on my mind!? Still I think it has been like this for ages...

So forks back in, exact amount of oil in each, and I have to say they feel better than they ever have. Which is weird cause all I did was replace the seals!? And I didn't notice anything was super wrong when I pulled them apart, but they used to be real clunky/noisy... and now they ain't? So yeah I dunno what I've done really but they're feeling really good. I did drop new springs in after Roger had done them earlier in the year – could I have fucked something up then?

While I was doing this I thought I'd try and fix a bunch of other niggly little things too. One being the piece-of-shit petrol tank I'd gotten from India a while back. I'd finally cleaned it out and had it painted (black and gold) but when I put it on the bike and rode it round it started leaking – seeping through the shitty welding round the taps and mounts. Sooo... I'm about to try putting a liner in this tank (without fucking the paint!?). I've got one of the POR15 kits and I've finally got the bungs I need etc so will be doing that soon.

On the last ride the throttle had been sticking really bad, so I stripped and cleaned the carb and also got a new throttle cable. Also I noticed the oil filter mount was loose and when I tried to tighten it the thread in the mount stripped. I'd actually had these re-threaded recently and so obviously that metal's gone soft so I ordered a new filter mount too...
And the tail-light that I'd gotten from MMCC a while back had also fallen off a while ago. It cracked from the vibration, and I'd just been riding round with no light for that last 6 months or so. Anyway I gave the bits to Jimi and he welded it back together but added these neat little braces on the side. He's done a bloody nice job. I'm lucky to have friends who help me with this sorta shit!
So yeah very close to being back on the road again. Really all I gotta do is get the tank liner sorted. I'll try and post again when that's done, maybe document that process here...Luke Woodhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11427410090230638301noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7927337482724463682.post-22562338321087526322016-09-05T01:25:00.001-07:002016-09-05T01:25:39.340-07:00RemoteMoto.com West Coast NZ

I've stolen this image straight from HERE. Malcolm sent me the link and it's been a real good reminder that there's some amazing rides to be done in NZ, especially if you can head out off road. When we were in the States last year I remember thinking it was cool to be somewhere new because I'd ridden just about every road in NZ. This post here on RemoteMoto.com highlights the fact that that's not true! And kinda makes me wanna get a decent on-road/off-road kinda bike again... I guess like the DRs we rode in America. Which is probably why Malcolm sent this to me. Well played sir, well played...Luke Woodhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11427410090230638301noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7927337482724463682.post-24611410796384664362016-08-01T19:33:00.000-07:002016-08-01T19:34:53.140-07:00BIlly Apple Interview

Here's a LINK to an interview I did with Billy Apple, a New Zealand artist, about an exhibition he's put on at the Christchurch Art Gallery. The exhibition features the only Britten V1000 that is still actually raced.
Bad Evil finally got a bigger bike! He's bought Ben's '74 Commando off him. There's a bit of work to do on it as Ben had it sat in a shed in Lyttelton for quite a while, but Bad'll have this up and running in no time. Looking forward to going for a decent open-road ride with Bad and with two Nortons from the same year. Will put up some more photos soon once Bad's got it ready to roll.

Footnote: Sucks for Ben to be having to sell this bike! Sorry 'bout that mate. Hey at least it's still sorta in the 'family' eh.Luke Woodhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11427410090230638301noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7927337482724463682.post-47330161779843755992016-06-26T20:46:00.003-07:002016-06-26T20:46:33.206-07:00Issue #4 RDU Interview

It's been a while but we can now say we will be officially launching issue #4 of Head Full of Snakes at the Melbourne Art Book Fair on May the 1st. Link the the launch here.

We're printing this issue with interns at the Ilam Press and hopefully getting started at the end of this week. As usual we're pushing it! Will post photos of production etc here as it's happening.

See you in Melbourne, or, if you're in NZ we will be having a launch in Christchurch too (probably on or around the 13th/14th of May).
Haven't posted any photos of this for a while cause I was waiting until I was more-or-less happy with it... that and just haven't been in the right kinda mood. I'm sorta getting quite sick of custom motorcycles... for a bit anyway. My Facebook feed and Instagram etc, it's all I ever see, and I'm sick of it. All the bikes look the same now and I dunno but I think I'm just finding it really boring. That said, I'm feeling fairly happy with where my Commando is at... EXCEPT the side covers. I'm gonna strip and repaint them just plain glossy black. I HATE the decals I made for them... as soon as I put them on I realised they look too 'gang-y', and fuck that. I am happy with the tank though, even after a good ribbing from various friends about how I should have got it hand painted, I'm pleased I stuck to my guns and made these decals at school. I won't go into it too much except to say that (like the whole custom bike thing I guess) the hand-painting thing has just started to seem a bit 'twee', a bit 'dinky', and actually too 'crafty' for me. As a graphic designer and NOT an illustrator, I'm more into mechanical reproduction, so this suits me and my schitck I guess. Beyond the decals I'm happy that I've kept the Commando fairly straight. The mods are very 'light', I haven't cut the frame or anything, and all the original bits can be put back on at a moments notice (when I get bored). I like that it looks a bit like it could maybe have come out like this? And it suits my riding better now too, I like to sit a little lower and feel more part of the bike now. That and I just like the way it's looking.. it suits my mood.

I took these photos in the weekend when I was replacing the oil line that runs up to the rockers. Unfortunately the lower banjo bolt had been RTV'd in though and it fell right out as soon as I loosened it, so now I've got the timing cover off for a helicoil or something? Shouldn't be long off the road though and I'm looking forward to riding this to Wellington in March for the Mummies gig there!Luke Woodhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11427410090230638301noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7927337482724463682.post-64013588266605317942015-11-30T15:59:00.000-08:002015-11-30T15:59:12.871-08:00Cheap Thrills Magazine (book?)

I've been buried in *other things* things lately and motorcycles haven't had a look in, as they say. Tried to get my norton tank sorted for the Smash Palace show but failed when at about 3am the night before I realised that the tank cap I had wasn't gonna fit. Anyway I thought I'd chuck this project up here cause it's what I've been busting my chops on lately...

This is Cheap Thrills, essentially a music zine/journal which was proposed to me by Erin Kimber and which I've (probably foolishly) jumped on board with as sort of an editor, but more designer/printer... and also somehow; collator, binder, trimmer... sheesh, good idea!? Nah it's been awesome, even though it almost killed me getting it ready for the launch on Saturday! One of my students, Luke Shaw, has worked tirelessly on this with me also and he deserves a decent handshake and a few free beers.
